If you want to know more about the book itself, I suggest you check out the Wikipedia article Herbert Wilcox, in his Daniel Defoe: His Life (1934) p. 63. From Daniel Defoe: His Life, New York : Cambridge University Press, 1934, v. 1. Daniel Defoe (?–1751), whose Moll Flanders is a woman of quite another kind, an adventuress whose loose life-style and crafty cunning recall the underworld, and even take us nearer to the life of the underworld itself than anything that has come since. 'Such a book as the Lives of the Renowned Pirates or Robbers could hardly have been produced,' wrote Defoe in 1728, and this not only for the reason that the life-stories of the great bandit-heroes were taboo, but because the life of the criminal had then 'not been yet studied or written.' Defoe's purpose was, as he put it, to write 'a History of the Lives of the Great Pirates and Robbers in the Age of Elizabeth, being a pattern for all such, as have a Desire to give their Lives an historical Life.' There is in fact only one such Life of the sort described by Defoe, in Moll Flanders, and that is his own. A: Dr. Gregory Cogburn's article "Defoe's Moll Flanders: One of the Best and Most Popular Books in the English Language" is a scholarly but well-written examination of Moll Flanders. Moll Flanders was first published in 1722. In it Defoe wrote, “To give my Readers a more exact Idea of the Life of the Banditti who lurked in those Parts, and were very numerous and formidable, in the Time I write, than any Thing has been yet, is my principal Aim in this Book.” (p. 1). Defoe had a strong commitment to the pirate life. Defoe appears to have had a great fascination with the pirate life, and as the Moll Flanders book attests, he explored and portrayed this life with great interest 4bc0debe42
