Synthesia is an award-winning software program, designed to help people with minimal music reading skills learn to play the piano using visual keyboard. Developed in 2007 in response to our daughter’s needs, Synthesia uses a research-proven method of instruction that does not require people read musical notation. Instead, common music symbols are replaced with graphics of keys on a virtual keyboard. Multi-level lessons each teach one skill at a time, starting with the most basic skills and gradually introducing more complex ones over time. The program enables beginners to quickly play recognizable tunes on the piano by tapping keys on their computer without reading sheet music or memorizing sequences of notes called "chords". Synthesia is not a game, but rather a learning aid which simulates the experience of playing the piano. It can be considered to be an electronic sheet music or "virtual keyboard." The software displays a full-size piano keyboard on the computer screen. Users select keys on this virtual keyboard to play notes. Its main purpose is to ease learning for persons who are interested in learning how to play the piano by ear, in particular children and adults with dyslexia or other disabilities that make reading sheet music difficult. Synthesia has also been used by people with Parkinson's disease and other motor impairments, as well as those who suffer from arthritis and other conditions that make typing difficult and painful. Synthesia is intended for people with little or no piano experience. It comes with several features to help beginners learn how to play the piano, including the ability to slow down or speed up playback of music, change key using a chromatic tuner, and create custom sequences of notes through interpolation. Synthesia can be set to automatically stop playing notes when users miss them. While this feature is designed for beginning learners who are still learning how much pressure to apply when typing on the computer keyboard, experienced users are free turn off this feature so that they can use Synthesia in much the same way they would use an actual piano.
